ARCHIVAL STORIES

Stories behind the gloves

This section is different from testimonials. These are fuller narratives that show why people send a glove in, what it meant to them before the work, and what it meant after.

Dan’s Wilson A2000XL

Received: Christmas, 1983

From: His father

Why it mattered: A lifetime glove, returned to the game with his son

Dan remembered the exact moment. Not just the glove — the moment his dad handed it to him. He played through high school, through college ball, through rec league softball. Then life slowed down and the glove sat.

This past season, his son decided to take up baseball. They started playing catch. The old A2000 came back out.

Dan didn’t want a new glove. He wanted that one — the one that was already there for everything. We restored it. He sent it back into the game.

Love your glove. Love your glove story.

Christie’s Softball Glove

Timing: Ahead of softball season

Condition: Interior cracked, broken down, falling apart

Work done: Interior replacement + web reinforcement

Christie sent her glove in ahead of softball season. The interior was cracked, broken down, and falling apart. The lining had given out.

John assessed it, replaced the interior with better leather than the glove originally came with, and reinforced a section of the web that was starting to open up.

She got back a glove that was structurally stronger than the day she bought it.

The Doctor is in.

The College Glove

Original use: College baseball

Condition: Worn-through inner lining

Future: Catch with kids and grandkids

A customer’s son used this Wilson in college. The inner lining had worn through — holes from years of sweat and play.

The customer wanted it repaired so he could play catch with his kids. And eventually, his grandkids.

John matched the leather, traced the original pieces, cut new lining, stitched it, and laced it back up in black to match the original. The glove went from a college career to a family heirloom in one restoration.

From college ball to grandkids. This one had more game left.

Ben Rice, New York Yankees

Glove: Catcher’s mitt

Issue: Tear in pocket leather + ripped web

Result: Returned to Yankee Stadium

Ben Rice’s catcher’s mitt came in with a major tear in the pocket leather and a ripped web. The kind of damage that only happens when a glove has been through a lot.

In the big leagues, most players just move to a new glove. Ben didn’t want to.

Yankees trainer Steve Donahue — a longtime connection to the shop — made the call. John restored it stitch by stitch. The glove went back to Yankee Stadium.

Some mitts aren’t ready to hang up their laces.

John Mulcahy’s WWII-Era Glove

Era: Early 1940s

Model: Hugh Mulcahy signature D&M glove

Goal: Preserve history and return it to use

John Mulcahy performs with an Airborne Demonstration Team that reenacts WWII parachute jumps. He brought in a Hugh Mulcahy signature model — a D&M glove from the early 1940s.

Hugh Mulcahy was a 1940 MLB All-Star and the first major leaguer drafted into military service in WWII. He left the game before the 1941 season to serve.

John Golomb replaced the lining, installed a palm shock pad, and preserved the original signature stamp. The glove went back into a pre-war style baseball game at a living history program.

Layered history. Restored with care. Put back in motion.
